About Dien Bien

Dien Bien was named by King Thieu Tri in 1841. Dien Bien means frontier robust, proving strategic location of this land. Dien Bien associated with the Dien Bien Phu historic - one of the symbols of the will to fight for independence and freedom of the Vietnamese people.
Dien Bien is a border province of Northwest Viet Nam, its area is 9.562.9 km2; population is over 52 thousand people. Dien Bien province consists of 10 administrative units: a city (city of Dien Bien Phu), a town (Muong Lay), 8 Districts (Dien Bien, Dien Bien Dong, Muong Ang, Tuan Giao, Tua Chua, Muong Cha, Muong Nhe, Nam Po). It’s about 480 km from Ha Noi and shares the border line with Laos and China, in which the border line with Laos is about 360 km, with China is about 40,861 km. In border lines, there are international border gates including Tay Trang – Pang Hoc and national border gates Huoi Puoc – Na Son with Laos, Apachai – Long Phu with China. Beside the highway routes, Dien Bien is exploiting Dien Bien Phu– Ha Noi airline with the frequency of 2 flights per day.
Dien Bien has high potential in tourism, especially in historical cultural tourism, ecological tourism, in which the most outstanding one is historical vestige of Dien Bien battlefield (one of the special national vestiges) with traditional cultural values of 19 ethnic group has distinct, plentiful and unique aspects. In addition, Dien Bien has many caves, hot mineral and lake spreading everywhere varying natural resources of Dien Bien for tourism.
Coming to Dien Bien, tourists can visit Historic battle of Dien Bien Phu with the campaign of 56 days and nights of “digging mountain, sleeping in trenchs, and squeezing rice in rains” to achieve ‘the legendary victory which astonished the whole world’. Typical vestiges such as: Hill A1, D1, Headquaters of Dien Bien Phu  base, Him Lam hill, road artillery pulling , headquaters of Dien Bien Phu campaign, have become historical documents record the glorious battle and the works as the Dien Bien Phu Victory Monument, Martyrs' Cemetery Hill A1, Dien Bien Phu  historic  victory Museum... is the cultural and historical works which were erected to preserve, record and celebrate the tremendous historical significance of the victory of Dien Bien Phu.
On 20/11/1953, the French occupied Dien Bien Phu, turning this place into the most powerful entrenched corporations in Indochina.
17:30 am on 05/07/1954, General Cat (De Castries) and all armies stationing at Dien Bien Phu (include about 16,200 troops) were out of the fight.
Dien Bien Phu victory has caused a great resonance to Vietnamese people in particular and the peace-loving people on the world in general. “ The Dien Bien Phu Victory was a golden glorious landmark of history” (Ho Chi Minh President said).
